Rag Baby by Mark Ellis

I love it when writers I admire surprise me with something just a tad different from what I expect, and I end up liking it. Now available as a digital e-book download, Rag Baby is a hardboiled crime story that makes for a quick and easy read. “A Bone Mizell Mystery,” about  a former DEA agent named Bonaparte Mizell now functioning as “Mizell Security Solutions.” Bone is hired to handle a blackmailing problem for Dale Bristline. It seems Dale’s wife, Brandy, whom Dales affectionately calls Rag Baby (read the story, you’ll understand) is being blackmailed by her late husband, back from the dead. Complications ensue, and this tightly woven plot with its myriad bad-asses and kooks turns into a roller-coaster entertainment. Mizell is a “broad-shouldered man” who wears a Stetson and drives a 1968 Mustang GT 390 Fastback. That alone makes him really cool, and Ellis naturally makes him a tough guy in the grand tradition of Sam Spade or Mike Hammer. Rag Baby is all about sex, money, greed and violence in Florida and Bone Mizell is a delight. Ellis is that type of highly skilled writer who can set a scene and populate it with fascinating characters with just the right words. Once you enter a doorway in one of his stories, you’re in the room with all of these people, and that’s when the fun begins. Rag Baby is another keeper and you can download the story for a few pennies right here at Amazon.
